1961 Ford Classic (Consul)

This vehicle is owned by a classic car enthusiast who has owned this vehicle for just over 40 years, and generally does a lot of their own car maintenance.  In this case the owner wanted to upgrade the distributor from the original Lucas 25D4 fitted with points and condenser to an electronic ignition module fitted within a 'look alike' distributor 25D4 body.

Tuning a Consul Classic by AG Classic Car Tuning

On arrival the car was warmed up from the journey and idling quite well around 850 rpm.  The first baseline checks revealed that the ignition at idle was very much advanced and significantly beyond spec.  Hence this was corrected, and after resetting valve clearances to 0.010" Inlet and 0.017" Exhaust, it was corrected once again after fitting the new distributor.

The second task was to look towards the correct function of the Zenith 32VN-2 carburettor and all valves, jets and chambers within.  Initially the car wasn't responding quite as it should to idle air adjustments and then as suspected later when stripped and cleaned, the economiser valve and air transfer vale wire compromised and needed a little clean up.

After cleaning the carb (internal and external) and reinstall, the air bleed valve was much more responsive and the accelerator pump jet could be seen 'injecting to the carb 'beak' to try and bridge the slight flat spot during transition from idle to moderate throttle opening.  So.....the car was the back to how it had been designed by Ford all those years ago.   Back to ticking over like a little sewing machine/

The below video is of Classic ticking over as meant to be.....lovely honest little car.

As mentioned already a lovely little family car of the from the 1960's with plenty more years ahead of her yet.  Lovely to get such positive feedback from the owner about their whole experience of the tuning process and AG Classic Car Tuning.
