1971 - MGB

1971 MGB 1.8 'B' Series

This owner had recently treat his wife to the car she had always wanted, and bought her a little MGB at auction.

Backround

Like many do, this client had bought a little MGB at auction so he and his wife could enjoy summer in an old British classic car.  The owner however thought that the car lacked a little 'oomph' and seemed hesitant at times.   So he booked in for me to take a look over the carbs, fuelling, ignition and timing in general.  His own timing of booking in with me was quite fortunate, because his car was a long way from running as it should and it could have proven very expensive and dangerous if left that way too.

Tuning notes

The good news for this client is that he had a good little engine under the bonnet, however it's current running set up was a long way from optimal.  The carbs were running very weak, out of balance, drawing air in through the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) hose and the ignition timing was very much retarded, and plug gaps were anything between 0.015 and 0.035.  All of which tend to make engines run much hotter than they should and can lead to expensive piston and valve damage.   Once all of these factors were checked, adjusted and set as they should the owner had a big smile on his face and now has the peace of mind that his car is running just as he hoped it would.
