1959 - MGA

1600

A beautiful restoration project with a subtle upgrade to twin HS6 SU carbs, requiring a little extra attention to ensure that this vehicle isn't 'over carb'd' for starting and low RPM driving.

Backround

This client contacted me to tell me that he had a long term project of a 1959 MGA 1600 that he was hoping to get a step closer to returning to the road.  He had done a few very tasteful modifications and upgrades including fitting twin 1.75" HS6 carbs instead of the factory standard twin 1.5" HS4 carbs.  Plus a new distributor including an electronic ignition module to replace the traditional points.

Tuning notes

The good news for this client is was that the engine was mechanically sound, but just needed a few tweaks to the ignition which appeared too retarded.  Plus some adjustment, modification and balancing of the twin HS6 carbs when on choke and also at Idle.  The slight bogey in this tuning session was that the triple prong Accuspark spark plugs almost unused but were intermittently faulty giving a poor spark induction.  Once replaced with new NGKBP6ES, gapped correctly the in running tuning could begin.  By the end of this set up this beautiful MGA was purring like a little kitten and will hopefully be back on the road again soon.
