1973 Rover P5B

Perhaps one of the most stunning cars that I have had the pleasure to work on.  I first met the owner and saw this car at a classic car show in North Yorkshire.  Not only did it win it's category, it also went on to win 'Best car in show'. Simply Stunning as you can see.

Anyway back to the tuning.........during a few years of ownership, this car had never quite run correctly.  As you'd expect the owner had taken advice from a few different sources, tweaked this...., tweaked that..... and each time in vain because the hesitation issue remained and the car continued to stutter now and then.  So the owner took the car to a rolling road, and they tried to work their magic.....however the hesitation remained.

Rover P5B, 3500 (Show winner) Tuned by AG Classic Car Tuning

The approach of AG Classic Car tuning is as much a general health check, as it is a tuning session.  Of course this process starts by checking all the key factors of the ignition and carburation are in the correct 'ball park', functioning as they should and giving the diagnostic readings that they should.  After doing these health checks, the owner remarked that the car was already starting to run much better than he could ever recall.  After a little more fine tuning, the car seemed to sound better and better and regained it's former V8 rumble, but still somehow wasn't quite right.

The carbs we set perfectly, every component of the Twin HS6 carbs were checked to be correct by part number and function test, the ignition timing had been adjusted, checked and double checked....but still the issue remained.  Just a slight hesitation under load.  During my checks there was one additional component which gave test values when checked which were ok' ish....but not great, and remained prime suspect as 'the gremlin'.  That being the ignition coil and the primary and secondary resistance values I had recorded.  When checked further this car was actually running a ballast resistance ignition, and the coil fitted very much appeared to be a non ballast ignition coil. It was therefore requiring 12v instead of the 10.2V ballast being being given.  Ah ha!!   It was because of all the health checks carried out by AG Classic Car Tuning, that 'the gremlin' which had evaded everyone else had now been identified and found.  The car could then be brought back to it's absolute best on the road to enjoy!!

It's very easy for owners to lose a bit of the love held for their classic when they aren't running the way they should.  For me it's then such an enjoyable pleasure of my work to see owners faces light up after a test drive of their 'newly' tuned car and take a step towards regaining trust in their car.

Again many thanks to this car owner for choosing to enlist the support of AG Car Tuning to help 'oust' the gremlin and bring their car back to life once again.
