Lotus Esprit S2 - Tuning by AG Classic Car Tuning

The above is a Lotus Esprit S2 which had been standing for a period of time and the owner was then going through the process of recommissioning the vehicle to bring it back into road usage.


After establishing baseline settings for ignition and fuelling, I could then explore the mechanical ignition advance profile as offered by the owners newly fitted electronic ignition based distributor.  Despite being a brand new distributor, sadly when checked by 2000rpm the ignition timing had already 'over advanced' by 15 deg which is simply not good enough, and could potentially be damaging to the engine.  There was no choice other than to remove the distributor and order a replacement from a higher quality supplier which would then give the correct ignition timing throughout the entire rpm range of the vehicle.

Carburettor float heights set, jets ultrasonically cleaned, carbs airflow balanced, synchronised and idle gas emissions set, NGK BPR7ES spark plugs re-gapped correctly.  Together with a high energy ignition coil paired to a new distributor, this engine now starts well runs well and is a step closer to returning to the road. - Tuning by AG Classic Car tuning.
